Sabrina Schels – “the little witch”
“I did my first glider flight at the age of 12 at my local airfield in Bavaria. When I was 15 years old I finally became a flight student and went solo a couple of weeks later. Since then nothing could stop me from flying. Friends joked about me taking off with a broomstick when they saw me walking around the airfield with the hangar broom!”
Sabrina has a German glider maintenance certificate, a winch driver’s licence, EASA aerobatics rating and a New Zealand B Category instructor rating and she also loves to fly vintage gliders. She has a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering and recently obtained her New Zealand residency.
Sabrina has been working for Glide Omarama for three years first as Ground crew and now as a popular, year-round Instructor. She loves to share her passion for cross-country soaring and has taken our guests on flights over 800 km long. Sabrina is also a regular participant in Omarama competitions, flying the single-seat Discus to 3rd place in the Racing Class during the 2018 South Island Regionals and winning the 20m Two-Seater Class in 2016 while flying with Dan.
“For me Omarama is a dream come true. Since my arrival here in 2016 I have learnt a lot and still I am just at the beginning of exploring this outstanding gliding playground with its breath-taking scenery and challenging weather conditions. There are simply too many bests, to count them all. Working with Glide Omarama enables me to introduce people to my world and hopefully one day, some of you might also get addicted to that same wonderful world of soaring!”
