In his final report the Contest Director, John Good, wrote the following words about the Kiwi pilots:

"We were honored to have a New Zealand team here: Gavin Wills and Theo Newfield traveled some 12,000 miles to fly at Parowan, and justified the effort by finishing ahead of all others. New Zealand (especially Omarama, on the south island, where both Theo and Gavin are based) is widely regarded as among the premier mountain flying sites in the world, and this result strongly suggests there is substance to this impression. At its best, flying at Parowan is principally thermal flying under high cumulus clouds organized by the mountain ridges that lie beneath. But when conditions get a bit tricky (as they often did this year) a refined understanding of terrain, winds and their interaction is worth a lot. Gavin and Theo obviously have this, as the final scoresheet testifies."
