The Omarama Area Familiarisation Course:
Flying in the Omarama envirionment can be challenging with it's volatile weather and high mountains. In good conditions local soaring within the Basin is straight forward but in difficult conditions the hardest and most frustrating part of the flight can be getting out of the local basin. For these reasons we strongly reccomend pilots, at least on their first visit, take one of our Mountain Soaring Courses.
The OA Familiarisation Course however is a prerequisite for experiecend pilots wishing to rent one of our gliders. It is reccomended for visiting pilots flying their own gliders here for the first time.
The course normally takes 2 days but can be completed in less if the weather is cooperative and the pilot experienced. Bookings are normally accepted for the weekends. The course includes:
- A Visiting Pilots Guide and Omarama map
- Ground briefing on local procedures, the airfield, airspace, land outs and general conditions
- A local airstrip inspection by tow plane.
- check ride for BFR or licence renewal
- two hours of gliding in a Duo Discus or Grob 103.
