Adventure Soaring Week

A truly unique holiday

Jan-wave-w
Jan on oxygen at 20,000 feet

An Adventure Soaring Week is:

  • A five day, live in, introduction to the joy of Mountain Soaring.
  • An extraordinary experience amongst the spectacular Southern Alps of New Zealand.
  • Flying in your own state of the art modern sailplane with your own highly experienced instructor,
  • A great learning opportunity about gliders and how to fly them, about the atmospheric soaring engine and how to utilise it and about your own relationship with the sky.

As weather and soaring conditions permit you will:

  • Each day make spectacular flights of up to 5 hours duration and 500 km long. These extraordinary flights may range throughout the Southern Alps from Mount Cook to Milford Sound and coast to coast across the South Island.
  • Soar to “the edge of space” (around 25,000 feet), and by surfing in Omarama’s famous mountain lee waves, cover long distances at ground speeds of over 300 kph!
  • Receive interesting seminars on how the sky’s soaring engines work.
  • Be briefed on high altitude flying, the use of oxygen and safety procedures.
  • Handle the controls and fly yourself under the guidance of your personal instructor.
  • Fly in our Duo Discus sailplane (each valued at around NZ$200,000!)

Prerequisites:

  • No previous flying experience is necessary but you do need to be confident that you are not prone to motion sickness or can manage it. Therefore it is likely that you will have had some previous experience in either light aircraft or in gliders.
  • You must be reasonably fit, meet certain simple medical requirements and weigh less than 110kg.

The Programme:

  • You will be accommodated in very comfortable self-contained airfield chalets, each with a splendid mountain view. (There is also an hotel option). The chalets contain a double bedroom, bath room, and a kitchen/living room with a roll-out bed. Meals may be prepared in your own kitchen or taken at one of the six restaurants in nearby Omarama town.
  • The day begins at 10:00 am with weather briefing, planning and a seminar.
  • Flights usually take off after lunch and return anywhere from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Normally one flight is made each day with the whole group of up to four gliders soaring together.
  • The day finishes with a club-house debrief over a cool drink.

Schedule:

The arrival date is normally the Sunday evening before the starting date below and departure is normally the Saturday morning after the finishing date below. Thus the experience is five full days from Monday through Friday.
